Community Walks

Rwenzori Trekking Services has assisted the local community to set up community trails as part of an conservation programme to preserve the environment in the Kilembe area adjoining the Rwenzori National Park and to provide alternative income to the local communities.

In the recent past the communities derived their income from poaching within the national park and cutting of trees for charcoal burning immediately outside the national park

There are three community trails starting from Rwenzori Backpackers and apart from the money paid for the guides and their training all of the money goes to the local community.

The Buwatha Trail is a two day walk starting from Rwenzori Backpackers Hostel,at 1493m and climbs to 2,150 m with fantastic views of the mountains and forests.

The Rucoochi Falls Trail is a one day walk and needs a higher level of fitness climbing as there are some steep parts up to 2,100 metres with great views of the mountains

The Nyamwamba Trail is a shoter trail meandering up the valley alongside the river climbing to 1,850 metres.

Cost of the one day trails is 15,000/- and the two day 50,000/- including camping in your own tent or 60,000/- if you wish to stay in one of the bandas (mattress is suplied but you will need you own sleeping bag) Evening meal and breakfast is provided by the local women.
